Impeccable extensions

LaTrynna was recently certified in a new extension system. The small strands of hair are very precisely placed and attached with a keratin adhesive, which is easy to remove with no damage to the hair. This adhesive is not damaging to the hair and creates a very small bond that lies close to the head. They last from 4 to 6 months before needing to be replaced. These extensions look so real that even when the wind blows the hair, the "attached" strands can not be detected. This is by far the best system that I have seen, not to mention that LaTrynna is a master with the application.

Tocco Magico Hair Color Class

Today was an exciting day at the salon. We were the host salon for a Tocco Magico Hair Color clinic. Tocco Magico hair color is an herbal based line from Italy. The company is the oldest herbal line in existence and has been making hair color since 1938. It is far superior to any color line on the market. Since we have decided to discontinue all other lines that we have been using and concentrate on the Tocco line, it was to our great benefit to have a clinic. There are a few nuances to using this line, therefore a clinic lead by a Tocco educator helped to give us all the information we needed to get full benefit from the extraordinary color line.

Victoria's Back to School Hair Cut

Richard has been working with us for 5 weeks. Victoria's mother, is Geri Bertolino who has been a colorist at the little salon for the past 8 years. Geri worked for Richard, 25 years ago at one of his salons in New Jersey. Since they haven't been working on the same day, they didn't realize that they were both working at the same salon in Sarasota until last week. It was a fun reunion. Small world.

Always Something New for Carrie

It is always fun to have Carrie in my chair. About every 3rd cut, she is interested in something new and fresh. Last visit she went from a short bob, to short layers. This time she wanted something more structured and even shorter. So.....we went very short with a very short, clean bang and small focal point at the edge. This cut is very versatile, she can push the entire front up and back to get it off of her face, and to create a more dramatic look. The cut is textured on top which will move in interesting ways when she uses a firm styling product. I wonder what we will do on Carrie's next visit?? Check back in about 6 weeks. A Shorter Summer Cut for Marge

Vera's Short and Textured

Vera's hair was already short, but too heavy on the top. She needed a reshaping with more texture on top. I suggested that some areas in the back grow a bit for fullness. The longer side of the fringe can grow some, for a more dramatic look. Vera had been wearing her hair long until just recently when she "bit the bullet" and went short. Short hair suites her very well. She is an artistic woman who was looking for something with more of an edge. With the texture on top and the asymmetrical fringe she will be able to create fun changes.

A New Direction for Mary

Mary had been wearing the same style for quite some time. It was an attractive style, but she felt it was time for a change. She did some research on the internet and found the little salon then drove from Venice for her new look. Mary brought a few pictures that she had cut from various magazines, which I always find very help full. Pictures give me a visual of what the client means when she says words like "short" or "layered". These terms can be interpreted differently by every individual. I got a feel for what she was looking for and then determined what would work for her hair and her face. I also kept in mind what would be easy to maintain. She will be able to blow her hair dry or let it dry naturally. I did suggest that she use a flat iron to straighten the bangs and sides. This is a very youthful look for Mary.

Gabi's hair has gotten very long, but the condition is still excellent. She has a RedKen Shades EQ put on every 6 to 8 weeks, to keep it shiny and to enhance the color. She also uses Morrocanoil after every shampoo, which helps to protect her hair from the sun and elements. Gabi's hair has alot of fine layering in it to give it fullness and movement.

Richard is the newest member to our staff. He is an excellent hair cutter and has a rich history in the "salon" industry.

Hairdresser and former NJ salon owner with over 25 years of extensive experience in the profession of hair design and fashion: Expertise includes precision haircutting, hairstyling, platform artist, state, national and international champion, and former World Supreme Winner.

As an educator, he was a teacher/owner of the Hair Fashion Institute, North Plainfield, NJ and Styles Director of NJ State Hairdressers Association. He also served in various educational and leadership roles in professional organizations such as The Coiffure Guild of NJ and Hair America. During this time, he was actively involved in educating students in national and international haircutting and styling competitions. He was the Fashion /Styles Director and partner in a mall salon chain, Beaux Gens, with stores in NJ and Pennsylvania .

As an accomplished member of his profession, he has been featured in articles in American Salon and Modern Hairstyling.

June is a busy month for weddings in Florida, the weather if mostly predictable and still comfortable for an evening, outdoor wedding. Updos work best, as they stay in place after the ceremony and reception, with all of the hugging, photographing and late night dancing. An updo can be as simple as a knot at the nape of the neck or elaborate creation with curls, braids and twists.

We seem to have a lot of curly girls at the little salon, could be that Florida's hot, humid weather encourages those of us with curls to embrace it rather than try and fight it. The key to a head full of "happy hair" is a combination of the right cut, by a stylist with curly experience and the proper products, that help us to enjoy the curly hair that we were blessed with. It sure beats spending hours with various brushes, straightening/de-frizzing products and blazing hot flat irons, only to have a subtropical evening send us repeatedly to the ladies room to re access the damage.

This is Tomi, her curls are very strong in the back of her head and a bit straighter in the front. I cut the front shorter and took some of the bulk out to encourage the curl to form better in the less curly areas. She is on a quest to let her hair grow a bit longer so she can wear it up in the coming "dog days" of summer. Curly hair that is pulled up is especially soft and lovely!

Meena has been letting her hair grow, the longer it gets the more the curls form. She is one of the fortunate women that can blow dry her hair into a silky straight style or use a diffuser and have beautiful curls. The mahogany color that Kristin has created has been enhanced with a plum highlight, which gives her hair an incredible shine.

We are moving

The little salon is moving to a new location. Our new home will be 2 blocks west of our Central Ave. location at 430 North Tamiami Trail (see the map above). We will still be "little" with all of the talented stylists and colorists that make the little salon the best in the area. Our new location will have light galore, natural light streaming in from the outside along with energy efficient LED lighting to aid our colorist/stylists in giving you the truest color possible. A generous parking lot right in front of the salon, with easy access from Tamiami Trail and/or 5th Street. We will be sending a newsletter to all of our clients when we make our move. The planned date is the 24th and 25th of May or 6th and 7th of June. We are all very excited to finally be in our new home and are equally excited to share it with all of you!

Ammonia Free Hair Color

In the Thursday Styles section of the NYT's on March 11 there was an article about "ammonia free" hair color. This new innovation is rightly called Innovation No Ammonia hair color. INOA, is being introduced to 200 handpicked salons by L'Oreal Professional for it's initial roll out. The advantage to using INOA above conventional hair color with ammonia is the cliente leaves the salon with a vibrant hair color that has covered the gray and left the hair in a smooth and healthy condition. No damage with ammonia free hair color and the salon experience is without the caustic smell and sometimes scalp irritation. The L'Oreal product is not the first to hit the professional market, they have the name and the marketing budget to get the word out. Not to mention that salons have been reluctant to try the "ammonia free" product for fear of the color not lasting. Here at the little salon we have been offering one of these pioneer products for the past 6 years. Organic Systems hair color is ammonia free and leaves the hair in a soft damage free state when the client leaves the salon. The line offers 65 beautiful colors. This is Vickie's third "new look" in the past 2 years. It's fun for both Vickie and myself to change her style every now and then. Her "bob" had grown substantially which gave us lots more hair to work with. We kept the length and added layers. The layers gave Vickie's hair more volume and movement. With such a pretty face, she can most any style.

Stephanie and Locks of Love

The length of Stephanie's hair was to the middle of her back. She purposely grew her hair so she could donate it to Locks of Love. They require a minimum of 10 inches. We had 11. It's Sunday morning and the temperature outside is 34 degrees. That's pretty cold for Floridians. Inside the little salon it's warm and cozy. A wonderful baroque choral is playing while the clients sip lattes and cappuccinos, another of our specialties at the little salon. Kristin chats with Dr. Day while Melvyn puts the finishing touches on Maria's hair cut. The little salon is open on Sunday every four weeks. Melvyn Ainger, Vidal prodigy, flies in from the north to cut and sometimes color, if Kristin is not available. Shades of the little salon

The color that leaves the little salon is the best in the area. Kristin who does most of our color has a rich history with Toni and Guy as a colorist and color educator. Brian has become an excellent colorist in his own right. She can create a natural shade of honey blonde, warm rich brunette or if your have a more adventurous side, an electric blue or vibrant red. I have been suggesting Kristin to many of my clients for their color, it frees me for more cutting time and we work well together. We consult with new clients together on color placement for the type of cut that I will be doing.

This is a stunning shade of red, created by Kristin. I would have loved for you to see the entire head, but I promised the young woman that would not.

This is a perfect example of how you can "drastically" change you hair color, and very effectively! I think Muriel looks fabulous both as a blond and brunette. This is one of Brian's creations from color to cut. The brunette photo does not show how beautifully rich the brunette is. We claim to be expert cutters and colorists, but not photographers.

Blue is not for everyone and it is not easy to achieve. Kristin has done a superb job of creating a tone on tone blue here for our very creative Ringling Student. The cut was done by Brian. Kristin and Brian often collaborate on creations like this one.

A little repair work for Liz

Liz had an asymmetrical cut in mind, but before she came to the salon she thought she would give it a try on her own. It's an interesting way to show a stylist how you would like to have your hair cut. I don't think that was Liz's intent, but in an odd sort of way it worked. It's a rainy day in Rosemary and we are loving it. I just got back in the salon from the Olive Oil Company and they are busy, busy. The salon is pretty busy for a Wednesday in August, with just enough down time to get a tea and post to the blog. Brian is at the OOCo. having lunch with friends, something he can't do so easily during the months from October through June. Kristin is taking some time off to be with her family, unfortunately her father is very ill and Alia is cleaning and getting to some chores that slip by in season. Otherwise it is business as usual. After walking back to the salon from the Olive Oil Company, I passed Lourdes and waved as she was finishing up with someone's nails, gave a nod to Kelly at Everything But the Girl and waved to a few neighbors on the street, I am thinking this is truly the most happening, most hip, most genuine neighborhood in Sarasota. Kudos to all of our Rosemary neighbors!!

Polly's new do

This is Polly's new look. She actually has very curly hair. Now she has straight hair with bangs! Polly teaches Graphic Design at Ringling and creates all of the fun graphics in our ads (one of them can be seen on the wall behind her). She is also and most importantly my sister.

Now that Polly has had so many compliments on her straight hair, we decided to make it straight permanently, well not in like forever, but for more than just a day.

Here is a pic just before we gave her the Keratin Infusion Treatment. The Infusion will keep the hair straight for a few shampooings and is only 25.00 per treatment.

Muriel decided that she wanted to be "very" blonde. It took two sessions, but the color that Brian achieved was spectacular! He applied a light base color and many, many fine highlights. The sleekness of the cut really shows the special quality of this color. I only wish that my photographic ability would have done the same.

Another curly girl. Laura has lots of wonderful curl. The cut is slightly beveled in the back to give lift and fullness to the back. We did put in some longer layers to help the curls form and give the hair bounce. We used the Deva Curl products from start to finish.

Chris Goes Curly

As with many clients, Chris didn't realize how much curl she really has. With the proper cut, the proper products and the proper drying technique a person's curl can really emerge. Chris new that the back of her hair had some curl, but didn't really know how much. With a slightly different cut and the new Deva Curl products Chris has a whole new look. After the cut we used Deva's Angell then diffused her hair and the result was.....lots and lots of curl.

Both Kristin and I work on Judy's hair. Kristin does the color and I do the cut. We have been working on this look for some time. I think this last cut and color really pulled it together. The color needed to be in just right places for the type of cut we have been working towards. Judy had her make up done just before we took this shot, by Meaghan Maureen. Meaghan is a new feature at the little salon. Every Thursday she is in the salon to offer eye brow shaping and make up application. Meaghan shapes brows with a tweezer, not wax, as to get a more defined line. She is tops in her field!

Vickie was in the mood for a new look, so we gave her a fuller bang and a more defined Bob. There is still a bit of layering to give the entire look more fullness. I think this look with the heavy bang really brings out her eyes!

The Rosemary Progressive Evening was a huge success. We had lots of people just having a great time walking through the streets and visiting with one another. It was like a huge block party with great music, compliments of our very own Brian J Boyd. Melvyn did the finish work on his models under the stars, even though it was very windy! Everything but the girl showed off their vintage clothing, Pure gave mini facial treatments, Lourdes was giving mini manicures and The Olive Oil Co. was full of happy folks. Visit the Rosemary District, along Central Avenue, on Saturday evening, March 28th, from 7-9 pm for A Progressive Night of Beauty, Fashion & Music, brought to you by: the little salon, Lourdes' Nail and Hair Salon, Pure Luxe, everything but the girl boutique and Sarasota Olive Oil Co. Each establishment will offer fresh looks for the spring in hair, beauty, and fashion, with a grand finale fashion show at 9 p.m.

Here's what's in store for the evening as you stroll along Central Avenue:

the little salon, an upscale, loft style salon, will showcase hair cuts and color for the upcoming season. The work will be done by the little salon staff along with Melvyn Ainger. Melvyn is former Creative Director for Vidal Sassoon in London and Miami. He travels to the little salon from Miami on the last weekend of each month, to assist owner Renee Wunderli in training the staff, as well as, scheduling his own clients. Food and drinks will be available for all that attend and a drawing for free service will take place at the end of the evening. Witness make-overs that Renee, Melvyn and the little salon staff will create and debut in the 9:00 fashion show. the little salon is located at 426 Central Avenue.

Lourdes' Nail and Hair Salon is featuring their new Almond Manicure, demonstrated "under the stars" at our manicure table in front of the salon. This new Rosemary salon will be introducing Josh Zimmer - Mei Zen Facial Acupunture. Josh will be discussing the benefits of Mei Zen facial acupuncture, as well as demonstrating some of the procedures involved. Additionally, meet Ivano Bobbera - Massage Therapist. Ivano will be discussing Swedish, Thai and Therapeutic Massage as well as demonstrating some of the procedures involved. Lourdes will be donating 10% of the proceeds for all packages sold the night of the event to the Mental Health Community Center of Sarasota.

Mary Jane with Curls

Mary Jane's photo has been posted previously, only with straight hair. This visit she decided that she would like to wear her hair in a more casual style. She new she had some curl, but she didn't know that she had this much! I often find that a client will know that they have some curl, but they really haven't had it cut to encourage the curl, nor have they been styling it to make the best of the curl. Mary Jane was surprised to see how curly her hair really is. The curly hair in most cases is much more youthful. We used the Deva Curl products and dryed it with a diffuser.

Karen has very curly hair, but she prefers to wear it straight. The cut is very short on the nape of her neck and longer on top so it can be straighten out easily with the flat iron. We use Slick, by Osis to keep the hair straight and smooth while it is being blown dry. The Slick also aids in straightening and protection the hair while we use the flat iron. What a great smile!

Margaret, Elaine, Shirley and Jeannie all have "wash and wear" hair. Both Jeannie and Shirley have body waves to give the hair support. All four ladies have cuts every 6 weeks to maintain the shape and in between they wash and style their own hair.

Carrie's New Cut

Carrie's cut keeps evolving. This time Brian cut the crown a bit shorter and left the sides heavier. More layering in the cut gives is a completely different look. Even though Carrie almost always blows her hair dry, it really looks great when it is left to air dry, could be the best of both worlds. Kristin adds highlights and lowlights to Carrie's naturally blonde locks. This really is a great style for Carrie, the short tousled cut suites her friendly, cheerful personality.

Melody

This is Melody, Melvyn's last client on Friday of last week. This may look like a classic Bob in the picture, but when Melody moves her head one can see that there is an amazing amount of texture in this cut. The basic shape and interior was cut like a classic Bob. After the cut was blown dry and ironed, Melvyn began his magic with the sculpting and texturizing that gives one of his cuts his personal signature. Melody's hair is actually curly, so she can wear this cut natural with the curl or blow it straight without the curl.

Last week end we were invited to be part of a team of hairstylists to prepare the models for the Lingerie Miami fashion show, which is part of Fashion Week in Miami. It was great fun even though a bit stressful at times. There were three lingerie designers, Agent Provocateur from the UK and two French designers, Fifi Chachanil and Carine Gilson. The above photos were taken back stage.

From Blonde to Mahogany

Brian took Amanda from blonde to mahogany in a few short hours. There are a few steps to insure that the color will have a deep natural tone, as well as, lasting through shampooings and exposure to the elements.

Amanda's hair is not only a beautiful color for her skin tone, it looks far healthier than the blonde.

Chloe

Chloe already had short hair, but the cut needed a shape that was more suited to her type of hair, and facial features. Her hair is very straight, with the added challenge of many cowlicks at the neckline and crown area. Chole's bang area is heavy with a strong forward growth pattern, so I gave her an asymmetrical bang so as not to have alot of hair on her face. The back is contoured to the shape of her head. With the way this cut frames her face it brings out her eyes and facial structure. We talked about letting the side grow longer, so this maybe a cut in progress. The cut accentuates her very pretty face.

Martina before and after

Martina has come all the way from Vienna to have her hair cut.......actually Martina is a friend visiting and while she was here I gave her a quick make over on her hair before she and her husband took off for Costa Rica. Martina's hair is fine and needs layers to give it more volume. Unfortunately we didn't have time to add a few highlights, which also gives fine hair more body. Her new look is very youthful and will be extremely easy to manage. For this look I did use a flatiron to smooth out areas that wanted to curl. This cut can also be dried naturally to give it a much more casual look.

Mary Lou

Mary Lou has long dark thick hair. We layer Mary Lou's hair to give it movement and volume. The layers are shorter at the crown and blend to the longest length just below her shoulders. That works well for someone like Mary Lou because of the volume of her hair. If the hair is somewhat thin, bringing the length up above the should is recommended. Thin hair left beyond the shoulders only separates and does not look it's best. Even though Mary Lou's hair is slightly curly, she has a Keratin Protein relaxer on it to keep the hair smooth and easy to manage in the Florida humidity. While "mom" Michelle was having her hair done, Tristan was busy sweeping hair and chatting with the other clients. He was such a delight! We took before and after pictures to show how the subtle color change can make quite a difference with Michelle's hair, and just to capture Tristan and Michelle together.

Lauren's back

Another new look for Lauren. The cut is quite different from her past cuts, but the color is similar, a dark base with blocks of blonde in the front. The goal is to continue to add more blonde as the dark base color grows out. I don't want to compromise Lauren's hair by trying to lighten while there is still tint on the dark hair. So, we will create this look one step at a time. One thing that we are adamant about here at the little salon is maintaining the condition and integrity of the hair while at the same time chemically alter it by using hair color and relaxer or curling solutions.

Crystal

I wish that we would have taken a before and after of Crystal. The change was dramatic, but very natural. Crystal's hair was shoulder length, dark blonde and the texture is very fine. Kristin added a head full of golden blonde highlights, which is where the dramatic change took place. The highlights transformed Crystal's hair color from a mousy blonde to stunning . The cut is very layered with an asymmetrical bang and long wispy sides to soften the front. The back is slightly shorter than the sides and layers were added to give her fine hair more volume.

Amara's The Election Day Cut

This is Amara, who saw our offer of a free Election Day Cut. She came in with her I Voted sticker and she made an appointment for her cut. She was up for anything that I wanted to do (ahhh, love it). She mentioned asymmetrical and that's what we did, short on one side and long on the other. Amara works at the South Florida Museum in Bradenton, which is a wonderful place to visit and learn about the history of the Gulf Coast of Florida. Jan's New Perm

Jan just had a perm! After I gave Jan her perm, I cut it and diffused it and she was good to go. For hair that is fine and straight, a perm is the best solution. At the little salon, we offer a very gentle perm by Organic Systems. Of course a perm can not be completely organic, but Organic Systems makes one that is as close as you can get. The curls always come out soft and natural looking, but firm enough to last until the hair grows out. The unpleasant oder that a perm once had has also changed to one that is mild and non offensive.

Film Night at the little salon

Models from our Training Workshop

These cuts were done by Alia and Kristin. Alia is currently a student of cosmetology in Sarasota, as well as, part time receptionist/assistant here at the little salon. Kristin is a color specialist in the salon and now, after many years of creating beautiful hair color, has the desire to cut hair. I think the bug hit her after seeing all of the wonderful cuts that leave the little salon. It is also very rewarding to create both the cut and color that work together for a client. Once a month we hold a cutting workshop for our staff and other stylists in the area. The workshops are taught by Melvyn Ainger, former creative director of Vidal Sassoon. It will be a few months before both Alia and Kristin go on the floor as cutters, but by then they will both be extremely skilled entry level hair cutters.

Rachel

Rachel is a new client to the little salon. She actually has very curly hair. This cut can be worn either straight or curly. We straightened Rachel's hair in this picture with a dryer and flatiron; it is temporary. The cut is layered to encourage the curl on those day's that Rachel feels like she would like a different look. Lucky girl to have the best of both worlds.

Sarah's Wedding Day

This is Sarah from Seattle. She came all the way to sunny Sarasota to get married on the beach. Her mom, Barbara, lives here, so that was another reason to travel to Sarasota for her wedding day. She was having a 60's style wedding, so the "flower in her hair" was a must. She new just where she wanted it placed and we did it just that way! We aim to please! Small, small world we live in...in talking to Sarah....only two weeks earlier she had been a customer where my daughter works in Seattle and Lauren (my daughter) had waited on her.

Sarah's make up was done by Gabrielle at the little salon.

Amanda

Amanda has gone slightly shorter over the past few years, with a bit more layering. I have also added low lights to her color, along with the blonde. The lowlights are warm with a bit of dark copper to give the overall color depth. Every time that Amanda comes in for her color and cut, about every 6 weeks, her daughter Harriet gets to go to a local salon and also have her hair cut. Next time I have a feeling we will be seeing Harriet for her cut at the little salon. Look for an upcoming photo of mom and daughter together.

Carrie's Wedding Day

Carrie came from the North to Sarasota for her wedding. Paul did her updo and I did her make up. The side part, with the way the hair was pulled back, but not straight back, was perfect for the shape of Carrie's face. The updo looked beautiful from every angle, front, side and back. Carrie's make up was done with Trucco. We used a light foundation, bronzer to highlight the cheek, with a light dusting all over the face. The eye shadow color is Dusk, with a darker liner, lips are Chakra Rose with a Sugar and Spice lip gloss.
