Jill

Jill came in to the salon today with something new in mind. Her last cut was an inverted Bob, long in the front and shorter in the back. She was interested in a longer look that had fullness on the top with the possibility of turning up on the ends. The cut that I gave Jill today can be worn smooth and very straight, slightly turned under on the bottom or turned up. She also will have the flexibilty of blowing it dry with only the dryer, no brush, to give it a very natural look. After we finished Jill's first reaction was "hmmmm, not sure maybe it should be shorter on the bottom". We decided she should live with it a few days and if she still feels it needs to be shorter she can come back in and we will shorten it a bit. Although the consensus of opinion in the salon was that she looks terrific the way it is!

Rebecca

Brian spent alot of time on this masterpiece hair cut. Rebecca looked pleased, as did Brian. We couldn't miss the enthusiasm on Brian's face for having created such a stunning cut. What a great way to end the week!

Ruth

This was Ruth's first visit to the little salon. She came on recommendation from one of my lovely clients, Aileen. It was wonderful, Ruth gave me carte blanche, I could do what ever I thought was appropriate for Ruth's color and cut. I decided on a color that was about a half shade darker and slightly more "brown" than the color she came in with. And for the cut..... it was a vast departure from what she was wearing. The back is slightly stacked and layered. There are areas that need to grow to achieve the look we ultimately want. After about 2 cuts, we should be where we want to be with the shape. Ruth has quite curly hair, and this cut will look great on her when she lets the curls be curls.

Olga

Nevin has given Olga a cut that is perfect for her face shape and over all look. This is a classic Bob that is reminiscent of the 20's. The geometric lines of this cut fall perfectly as Olga moves her head. A quick blow dry and touch up with the flatiron and Olga is on her way. A very easy cut to maintain. This was Olga's first visit with Nevin and from the way it looked when she left the salon, it won't be her last. We are happy to have her as a client to wear such a stunning cut as walking advertisement for the little salon.

Calli

Calli is a new Mom. Today was a day to concentrate on Calli. She hasn't had her hair cut or colored professionally in a very long time, so today was the day for a new color and cut. Kristin colored Calli's hair with a chestnut Tocco Magico color, which gave Calli's hair a whole new life! Nevin cut Calli's hair from past her shoulders to this great looking style. Her hair is naturally curly. After the blow dry, Nevin used the flatiron to smooth the hair before finishing the cut. Calli prefers to where her hair straight, although this cut will look just as good curly as it does straight. She plans on coming in to the salon next week to have her hair permanently straightened. The straightener will help Calli to dry her hair in a sleek smooth look and keep it that way between shampoo's.

Kathryn

Kathryn looks soooooooooooooo good with her new updated cut. She had been wearing her hair in a one length to the shoulder style for a long time. This is the second cut on her new style. We gave the hair a more contemporary look by taking out bulk to eliminate a round look. She has some wave in her hair that she can take advantage of on those humid days (which is most of the time in Florida). Kathryn is very busy with her position as a speech therapist in the Sarasota School system, taking classes for her own pleasure, enjoying photography and did I hear her say something about exercising too!

Removing Extensions

Extensions can be a wonderful thing when they make a head of hair look twice as full, but when it comes to removing them it can be an arduous task. It took both Brian and John to complete this removal. The extension where put in and removed by another salon in Sarasota, but unfortunately the glue was left in the hair. Brian was scheduled to cut the clients hair, but could not do the cut until all of the glue was removed. After getting all of the glue out, Brian did the cut and used a gloss to brighten the hair. This will be a work in progress, the color is scheduled for next week. To be continued.........

Brian, Ezeqiel and Katherine

Katherine and Ezeqiel are here from Italy. They were referred to the salon by some of there Italian friends who live in Sarasota and are clients of the little salon. Ezeqiel's hair was about collar length and very curly. They discussed a new look, through translation by Katherine, and agreed that Brian could do what he thought best. The shorter hair looks great and I think he was very pleased. When Brian finished, Ezeqiel held out his hand with a huge smile on his face and gave Brian a very warm and hearty handshake. I only wish that I would have had the camera out at that moment.

Sue

Some looks are timeless. This is a classic Butterfly, or "Dorothy Hamill. Sue has been coming to the salon for a few years. Today I gave her a new style, this is the shortest that her has been since she has been coming to the salon. The shorter hair is very becoming on Sue and will be much easier to take care of. She has some curl in her hair, so we use a large round brush to blow dry and finish it with the flatiron. We use Osis Slick to keep the hair straight and to protect it from the iron.

Zebo

Zebo was in today to see Brian for a color and cut. I have been cutting her hair and Geri and I have colored Zebo's hair. She decided that she would like to try Brian for a cut this time, not because she has not been pleased, but to try someone and something different. This is where the little salon differs from many other salons, our clients need not feel uncomfortable moving from one stylist to another in the salon, we work as a team. Brian has been trained by myself and our creative director, Nevin, so the quality and style of his work is like ours. Although we all put our personal spin on the work we do as individuals. Brian gave Zebo a beautiful Bob with an asymmetrical bang. The color is two toned, lighter on the top and a darker shade underneath. Zebo is a artist, she paints murals and is now illustrating children's books. She is extremely talented. She can be contacted at http://www.zebostudio.com/.

Marie

Marie is a local antique dealer whose specialty is fine linens and lace. She travels the state selling at antique and flea markets. She said that it is alot of work setting up and breaking down for a show, but at the same time very enjoyable. Marie has fairly fine hair, but alot of it. She has been wearing her hair a bit longer until this cut, which we took a little shorter. I think the shorter style suits her best. This is a classic Bob. We talked about cutting the back shorter, which will give the entire look more fullness and bounce, possibly next cut. I used a small amount of Osis Grip mousse for fullness and we finished it off with Osis Sherbet spray wax to give it a bit of separation.

Susan

On Saturday both Brian and I saw Susan in the salon. Brian did her color and I gave her a new cut. The color is a single process light blonde. Susan came in with a basic layered cut. She wanted something new with a little edge. The front of Susan's hair has a very strong forward growth pattern, and she doesn't like her hair falling in her face. Her hair is thick, so we had alot to work with. I shortened her layers and gave her a more up to date shape. The neckline is inverted, shorter in the middle and longer on each side. I left the sides long, well below her ear. The front was not cut until after the blow dry so I could see how the hair would fall when it was dry. To give the cut more of an edge, I cut the center of the fringe short and left either side of the fringe long. Then I texturized the entire head to give it a feathery soft look. A spray wax was used for the finish to give it separation and shine. The look is really good for her face and hair type, as well as, frames her incredibly blue eyes nicely.

Holly

Holly is a very busy teacher at Ringling School of Art and Design, so she needs a style that takes minimal up keep. Since her hair is straight the short layered cut that Paul has given her works with her life style. She can easily shampoo every day without needing to use brushes and irons to style, the cut is the style. This cut looks great with the shape of Holly's face, it really brings out her eyes.

Marianne

Marianne was in on Saturday to see Paul. She has a single process color with a few highlights on the top, which looks very, very natural. The cut is a layered Bob, with a slightly inverted neckline for softness on the nape of the neck. Marianne's cut is easy to care for. We had a blowdry class at the salon and Marianne came with the tools that she uses at home. I had the pleasure of working with her in the class while Paul worked with another one of his clients. I gave her a few tips on how to dry her hair quickly and efficiently. We will be having more classes in the future if anyone is interested, please call John at the front desk to add your name to the list for the next class.

Curly, curly hair

There's curly hair and then there is curly hair. The best way to wear hair this curly is long with long layers. If the hair is left one length it will have a triangular shape, which is not very attractive . To create a pleasing shape, the cut needs long layers in the back to eliminate a shelf at the bottom and layers around the front to frame the face, then the overall look is soft. Curly, curly hair should never be cut with a razor (or for that matter, any type of hair), when those razored out pieces begin to grow the hair will look twice a "big" as it is naturally. When drying this type of hair, less is better. Letting it dry naturally is best, without touching it during the drying process, or if you need to do it quickly, use a diffuser. It needs a rinse out conditioner, as well as, a leave in. One that will leave the hair very soft and shiny. We used Pureology's Instant Repair, great for curly hair! To finish we used Alfaparf's Cristalli Liquidi, which is loaded with linseed oil.

Questions??

If you have questions about the little salon or about your hair, please send a comment via the comment link, or send an email to renee@thelittlesalon.com

Wendy with curls

Remember Wendy. She was last in the salon on December 12 for her 4 week color and cut. Today we cut Wendy's hair as usual, (we are working on a longer version of the same cut). She said she wanted to continue with the cut, but could we style it differently today. Since Wendy has beautiful curly hair that was not a difficult task. I used the diffuser to blow her hair dry and then "tweaked" some of the ends with the flatiron to finish. The flatiron is not only for making hair silky straight, it also works very well when just a lift or turn is needed for reshaping areas. It works much better than a conventional curling iron. We then topped if off with spray wax for shine and separation.

Afternoon at the little salon

Phyliss and Barbara wait at the espresso bar after their appointments. They found time to chat while Phyliss waits for her ride and Barbara waits for her son John to have lunch. Donna who is standing at the desk just had her color done by Geri and blow dry with Brian. It was a very busy day at the little salon!

Barbara

Barbara came to the salon for the first time last year, just before she set off on a trip to Africa, where she had many amazing experiences. Before she left we cut her much longer hair, but not until she came back did we cut it as short as she is wearing it now. I think this length suits her best. Barbara has also let her previously blonde hair grow out to the natural color. The natural color is really lovely on her. Barbara is a talented photographer and writer,to see and read about Barbara's many trips go to www.holeinthedonut.com.

Marina

Marina was our neighbor on Central Ave., she is the owner of Creme, which was right next door to us. She is now on South Trail, just past Bee Ridge next to Verizon. We really miss her here in the Rosemary District. Marina is a very skilled and knowledgeable skin care specialist. She came to the US from Berlin, hence her approach to skin care which is the European technique. As you can see by her lovely skin, she practices what she preaches. Kristin colors Marina's hair with a single process high lift product by Schwarzkopf. After the hair has lifted to the desired level, Kristin applies a gloss by RedKen to give the hair a soft platinum shade. I cut Marina's hair in a layered bob, which is slightly shorter in the back and longer on the sides. Marina's new salon is called Creme Salon and Spa. It is a full service spa, with nail, skin and body services; as well as, a full line of beautiful skin and body care products. She can be reached at 330.9660.

Melissa during and after

Melissa had a head full of foils today. Kristin used three colors for the beautiful blonde color she created. She is a master with blondes and with creating interesting foil packets! If she had more time I'm sure she would do a head full of origami. I cut Melissa's hair into a basic long layered look, which she can curl or wear straight. She does have some wave in her hair so curling it would be beautiful. Melissa is very tall, so the very long hair suits her. Pretty girl!!

Donna

Donna is an attorney in Bradenton, with her busy schedule she needs a simple cut that she can easily take care of at home. Today, Geri put highlights and lowlights in Donna's hair for a natural blonde look. I gave her a bob, which is graduated in the back for lift and fullness. I like the way she pulls one side behind her ear, it is a classic look. Donna has such a great smile!

Carla

Carla is new to Sarasota for about a year now. She is from Newfoundland, that's quite a temperature change! I think her look is great! She likes a simple bob. I did graduate the back slightly for more fullness. The fringe was kept straight and blunt, any texturizing of her fringe would create a separation, which is not a look that she likes. When creating a cut for a client we always listen to what is important to her or him, to assure that they will feel comfortable with their style when they leave the salon.

Margery

Margery is a very busy travel agent and tour guide. The salon is full of energy when Margery is here. When I talk with her, I get the feeling that she knows something about, just about everything! Her hair is very long right now and we put layers into it for movement. She has a very strong left, side part, so the style we create must work with her part. This time I left all of the length and put alot of layering in it. For her color, I alternate high and low lights to give her blonde hair more depth.

Karma

Karma has a single process color and a gloss by Kristin and cut from me. When Karma came to us her hair was damaged from over processed color. Now her hair is in much better condition, due to the gloss and the care that Kristin takes when applying the color. Karma works in the school system in Bradenton and has a very busy schedule, so she likes a cut that requires little maintenance. Since her hair is fine the layers work well for her. We use a Denman brush to blow the hair dry and tweak is slightly with the flat iron to finish, which produces a soft natural look with alot of shine.

Teri

This was Teri's first visit to the little salon. She saw one of my clients who works at Macy's and asked where she has her hair cut. That is the way most of our clients come to us, "word of mouth", the best way! We didn't take alot of length off of Teri's hair, simply reshaped the hair onto a more stylish look. Teri's hair is fine, although there is alot of it, that is why a layered bob works very well for her. The layers give the hair more lift and fullness. Again, as with many of our new clients, a simple reshape gives her a whole new fresh look. As I watched Teri walk across the street to her car, the wind blew her hair and it fell right back into shape. This will be an easy cut for her to maintain.

Deborah and Christopher

Deborah and Christopher are unmistakably related, a very happy mother and son. Chris was recommended to Brian by one of his fellow students at Ringling. Deborah was in town from Memphis visiting her son and took advantage of the opportunity to have her hair colored and cut at the little salon. Deborah's hair was shoulder length when she came in, the new look is very fresh and youthful.
